. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today. bill: president obama telling the american people there is one pledge he will always keep. >> four years ago i said i'm not a perfect man and i'm no won't be a perfect president. that's probably a promise governor romney thinks i have kept. you i promised i would fight every single day for the american people and the middle class. i kept that promise. if you will vote for me, then i promise i will fight just as hard in a second term. bill: this won't be long. but give me four minutes. the romney campaign says he was a clear winner on substance. >> mitt romney may have scored some style point during this theatrical debate performance but he failed on the facts and his credibility didn't pass the bar the american people are looking

because it will take a long-term, not a long-term, up to a week to she in the presidents. we don't know yet what it will look like in the battleground states. the obama campaign is moving very quickly to make that trust argument against mitt romney through some of their surrogates in states like ohio and virginia and others. they don't want this to take off for mitt romney. >>trace: it could take a few days or a week to find out how it polls. i will give you exams of how it is polling. this is cbs and cbs says that 56 percent say their opinion of mitt romney has changed, and 63 percent say romney cares about their needs and problems. that is up 33 percent from before the debate. those are good numbers. >>guest: they sure you. one thing that the focus groups showed up last night, we have had a lot of undecided voters liked what they heard from mitt romney about the bipartisan record as governor of massachusetts. that is not something that gets on the trail. we don't see that in ads. we see a last independent voters like that. president obama has a reputation for just pushing through big

days before the presidential election. but this was a very good end to a bad week for the president. really the best possible end that president obama could have hoped for. mitt romney came out so strong in that debate, president obama lackluster. he got called rusty. detached. not the words he was looking for. >> hold that thought, we're going to talk about that. i want to go back to something, four days before the presidential election is when the next jobs report is going to come out. if they go down even further? what does that mean if. >> it could go down. it could also go back up. >> right. >> this has been an economic recovery that's been a difficult one. the administration says that as well. this was a great jobs report for the president. it broke down past that 8% mark that mitt romney's been hitting so hard in this campaign. >> you can imagine -- >> this is a great day for the president. >> you can imagine the white house and probably the campaign in chicago doing somersaults. does this make people now say, what debate? by most people's accounts, the president was awful, h

that this was a preplanned attack and yet the obama administration, the white house, the president, all of the individuals involved, spent the course of the next week or so denying that. what's going on here? is this incompetence? is it confusion, or, is it a deliberate, intentional cover-up? >> i think it is deliberate to downplay the threats because clearly the narrative that the obama campaign has been trying to push that usama bin laden is dead and al qaeda is crushed and we know that is not true. like a balloon, if you crush the balloon and just looking at the front of it looks like al qaeda may be dead but you missed the fact that it is popping out in all these other areas. gregg: what white house press secretary jay carney and u.n. ambassador susan rice were telling the american people, not to mention the folks on capitol hill, was simply untrue. they were doing that for more than a week as we mentioned. now the latest offering up an explanation is general james clapper, the director of national intelligence. and here's his explanation and or excuse depending upon your point of view. we'll put it o

, every week they've had dozens of staff on the ground in new hampshire for obama for months and months, got a real head start on canvassing, phone calling and motivating that democratic base that had been sagging a year ago. that is almost up to the same level of intensity of republican support for mitt romney and that's what makes this race so close and i think it will stay close all the way to november 6th. gregg: kevin, great to see you, thanks so much for your incites. jenna: you talk about the ground game and voter turn out, what about absentee ballots, what about legislate the troops vote while serving overseas. we'll tell you next what the pentagon is doing to increase voter participation by our military men and women, that is ahead. plus a rare spider. looks creepy. gregg: albino spied jeer that spider was discovered a long a highway and because it was discovered construction on a highway project worth millions of dollars was stopped. we'll tell you why next. something once a week. on the serious side because it's really -- i think people will discounts what he says because it's biden. they'll say well, he's off on his own again. but from obama, you saw those quips he was tossing out. the stuff that you wish you had said, all the witty remarks and rebuttals that you never said at the dinner, but you remember on the way out. so he had all of these chances last night, which again shows he doesn't have a good game when it comes to being quick and effective on his feet, he's trying to make up for it. but what's going to happen in the second debate, it's going to be a town hall. that's different dynamic, how you interact with the audience. that's where, for example, bush did badly. bush won and clinton did really well. so that's going to be a challenge. romney is really good one on one. it will be different in a town hall for him. >> bret: we have the wit of the staircase sometimes here on the panel. when we leave the panel, man, why didn't i say that. >> i have the wit of the car every night.
